PFAS: Quick Facts

  • PFAS refers to a group of over 8,000 chemicals that include some element of fluorine bonded with carbon. PFAS are found in everyday applications such as food packaging and water-resistant clothing and are known for their oil repellency characteristics.
  • Several PFAS chemicals, most notably PFOA, PFOS, and GenX, have been identified to pose potential health or environmental risks. The finish historically used on our products was not formulated with these specific chemicals. However, the EPA, multiple states, and Canada have enacted or are soon to enact legislation that places restrictions on, or requires disclosing the use of, PFAS chemistries.
  • The details of each regulation vary and range from bans of PFAS-containing textiles or textile products to complex reporting requirements for the sale of PFAS-containing textile products.

Our Path Forward: Update

  • We are committed to providing the highest quality products and minimizing our environmental impact. As such, we invested significant resources to develop the best possible PFAS alternatives and began a rolling transition to non-PFAS production in March 2023 across our entire product portfolio.
  • We remain on track for a complete conversion of all newly manufactured fabrics in early 2025 to ensure compliance with upcoming regulations. Currently, all newly manufactured upholstery fabrics and nearly all newly manufactured awning and marine styles are fully converted.
  • We will continue the use of non-PFAS labels on all applicable fabric rolls and other order materials for the foreseeable future to support differentiation of non-PFAS vs. PFAS-containing fabrics in partner inventories.

Non-PFAS Performance: What to Expect

  • Our transition to a non-PFAS solution will not impact the ability to clean Sunbrella fabrics, but will result in reduced levels of oil repellency. This is an industry-wide challenge and not exclusive to our fabrics.
  • Our non-PFAS production will continue to meet Sunbrella expectations in real-world settings, remaining highly cleanable, durable, and UV resistant due to the inherent performance of our proprietary Color to the Core™ technology. We stand behind this performance with the most comprehensive warranty in the industry*.
  • Because Sunbrella performance is engineered into the fiber, most oil-based spills can be cleaned and removed from our fabrics following our care and cleaning recommendations. For added assurance, we launched our line of proprietary cleaning products this spring, including Sunbrella Extract™, which is specifically formulated to resolve oil-based spills.
  • This transition will not disrupt our lead times or service levels. We will continue to carry the third-party Greenguard Gold and OEKO-TEX® certifications verifying that Sunbrella fabrics have low chemical emissions and that no harmful substances are used to produce OEKO-TEX-applicable fabrics. Our Sunbrella shade fabrics continue to provide lasting sun protection and are recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation as part of a complete sun protection regimen.
