Drapes Measuring Guide

How to Measure Width For Custom Drapes
Diagram: How to Measure Drapery Width

Carefully follow the instructions below to get an accurate measurement for your custom drapes. During the ordering process, please confirm your order specs before checkout.

How to Measure Width (Coverage Area)

Measure the area you wish to cover

To measure the area you wish to cover, you can use one of these two methods:

  • Rod Face (A) — Measure the width of your drapery rod, not including finials
  • Coverage Area — Measure the width of the area you want to cover

We have made allowances for appropriate custom fullness, returns and overlaps. See how we calculate fullness.

Consider the following:

  • If ordering pleated drapery, consider adding 4" - 6" on either side of your opening to maximize natural light and provide the best finished look.
  • We have made allowances for fullness, returns and overlaps to ensure a beautiful finished look.
  • If ordering panels that do not close and are intended for decorative purposes, consider ordering drapery with less coverage.
  • If you need the panels to completely clear the entire window and frame when opened (such as with French Door applications), please contact us to help you calculate your drapery width.

How to Measure Length

Due to how the drapes hang on the drapery rod, it is important to measure length using the style measuring guides below.

Choose a drapery style below to jump to the measurement instructions:

Tab Top Drapes

Custom tab top drapes
  • Measure from the top of the drapery rod to the floor (as shown).
  • The diameter of your drapery rod will affect the length of your panel.
  • Tabs on Tab Top Drapes are 4" long and will not accommodate a rod larger than 2" in diameter.

Grommet Drapes

custom grommet drapes
  • Measure from 1 inch above the drapery rod to the floor (as shown).
  • Take into consideration that there is an additional 1" of panel above the rod since the grommets are set 1" down from the top of the drapery panel. Be sure that your drapery rod is mounted high enough that the bottom of the grommet is higher than the top of the window molding.

Rod Pocket Drapes

Rod Pocket Drapes
  • Measure from the top of the drapery rod to the floor (as shown).
  • Rod Pocket Size & Take-Up Measurement: When ordering Custom Rod Pocket Drapes, you will also choose the size of your rod pocket. There is some rod take-up when the material is gathered onto the pole.

Determine your drapery rod diameter, and refer to the chart below to determine the amount of additional take-up that is required. Add the take-up measurement to your Drapery Length when ordering.

Installation & length tips:

  • Drapery hardware is typically hung 4" above an opening for standard installation, or as close to the ceiling as possible. Doing this will provide the illusion of a larger window.
  • Graze Length: The drapery panel hangs just at the floor
  • Trouser Length: Add 1"-3" to your Drapery Length so that the panel spills slightly onto the floor. Trouser is not recommended for functional drapery panels.
  • Puddle Length: Add 4"-12" to your Drapery Length so that the panel "puddles" on the floor. Puddling is not recommended for functional drapery panels.

Fullness Allowance

We have made allowances for appropriate custom fullness, returns and overlaps to ensure a beautiful finished look.

The calculated fullness allowance is found in the pleats of our pleated drapery styles. Please consider that the Coverage Area ordered will be the Finished Width you receive:

  • French Pleat - Coverage area (Rod Face) X 2.5 = Fullness
  • Euro Pleat - Coverage area (Rod Face) X 2.5 = Fullness
  • Goblet Pleat - Coverage area (Rod Face) X 3 = Fullness

The fullness for the styles below are calculated based on the Coverage Area ordered. Please consider that the Finished Width you receive will be larger than your Coverage Area because of this fullness calculation:

  • Flat - Coverage Area (Rod Face) X 2.0 = Finished Width for Fullness
  • Clip Top - Coverage Area (Rod Face) X 2.0 = Finished Width for Fullness
  • Grommet - Coverage Area (Rod Face) X 2.0 = Finished Width for Fullness
  • Tab Top - Coverage Area (Rod Face) X 2.0 = Finished Width for Fullness
  • Tie - Coverage Area (Rod Face) X 2.0 = Finished Width for Fullness
  • Rod Pocket - Coverage Area (Rod Face) X 2.5 = Finished Width for Fullness
