If you like to be at the start of a trend before everyone has the look, then this outdoor trend of horizontal walls is for you! Whether it’s a fence or an accent wall, creating a horizontal wall in your backyard can completely transform your space. The horizontal approach to a wall makes an area look much wider and bigger than traditional vertical features. As a combination of seeing traditional materials in an unexpected form, horizontal walls provide a fresh new look for patios and decks. . A horizontal wall can also be a great resource for hiding sore spots within your yard.  If you are one that loves shiplap walls indoors (Thanks, Joanna Gaines), this is a great way to bring that same look to your patio. With so many different ways to create a horizontal wall, from using different size boards, creating a shadowbox look, or using different color stains and paints, it can be the perfect new feature for your home.

2 .Succulents for a Stunning Look

Plants are an expected decor items in an outdoor space, but using unexpected plants in traditional ways makes plants a new outdoor trend for 2016. Plants have always been a great way to bring life to your space – even in an outdoor space that’s full of life – but low-maintenance plants, such as succulents or air plants, are a fun way to add color and add a unanticipated element to decor. With these plants, there are many DIY projects you can do to display them.

A popular outdoor trend is to use succulents. If you love the look of large letters in your decor, create a wall mount out of succulent letters – all you need is a letter frame, wire netting (commonly referred to as chicken wire), moss, and succulents. Fill the frame with moss, placing the wire close to the top of the frame to hold the succulents in place. The moss will hide the wire. Carefully pull apart each succulent so you can plant smaller pieces within the moss. Push a hole through the moss and gently push the roots of the succulents into the moss and tuck it in around the wire, but be careful not to break the succulent from its root. Continue until the frame is full!

If you are looking for a simple way to display your plants, start by planting them individually in mason jars. Planting them individually allows you to display them in many different ways. Put them all together on a decorative tray or create floating shelves to place them on.

5. Lighting for a Romantic Escape

Lighting on your patio is a must, even with the longer days of summer. While many of us have seen and maybe even added string lights with big bulbs around our patios, the trick is to find new ways to make them unique to your patio. Hang them vertically down a wall to create a nice glow or hang them around a feature wall, such as your new horizontal wall or plant decor, to play up a focal point. If you want to keep them hanging around your patio, add a new feature to them. Intertwine the strand of lights with a thick sisal rope to add a fun touch!
