Cushion Source™ is pleased to feature interior designer Ashley Gilbreath, founder of Ashley Gilbreath Interior Design and owner of PARISH Shoppe, as our guest blogger this month. Gilbreath previously worked with famed designer Richard Keith Langham in New York City before she went on to perfect her craft in the commercial, hospitality, and residential design industries with numerous clients across the U.S. Gilbreath’s aesthetic vision produces timeless design traditions of blending old and new elements into sophisticated works of art. Her unique perspective results in spaces that are both relaxed and versatile.

Located in the charming Cloverdale Village of Montgomery, Ala., PARISH Shoppe also houses her custom design studio. Gilbreath recently loaned us her studio to use as a backdrop for a Cushion Source photo shoot. During the shoot, she was kind enough to share some of her trade secrets for decorating outdoors with custom cushions and pillows.

What is the first thing you take into consideration when planning outdoor decor?

DURABILITY! OK…color is a close second, but if something is going to get tortured by the Southern sun, it has to be tough!

What are your must haves in outdoor furniture?

We want outdoor furniture to look like it could belong inside. Clean lines, wood details, and concrete pieces are all a home run in our book!

What fabrics do you prefer on outdoor seating and pillows?

Sunbrella® and Perennials® are easy no-brainers, but we are currently loving outdoor velvets for pillows and other accent pieces.

When it comes to outdoor cushions and throw pillows, do you have any do’s or don’ts?

There’s nothing sadder than a small, flimsy looking outdoor pillow! Instead, opt for a 22” square or larger on sofas. We also like to use a flange or a trim to add a little more detail than a standard knife edge.

What are your tips for styling with floor cushions?

This is a great place to add a punchy color that you’re not as committed to as you would be on sofa or chair upholstery! We love to add in seating wherever possible, and floor cushions are an easy way to do it!

What are some of your favorite places to feature outdoor drapery?

Porches, balconies, and pool houses are the best places for outdoor drapery! Be sure to use anti-microbial lining. You‘ll know if you don’t. Mold isn’t pretty.

Any other thoughts or ideas on outdoor decorating with cushions and pillows you would like to share?

When planning to use outdoor cushions and pillows, be sure to have a plan in place to store them. We love the idea of pulling out extra cushions from a pretty basket or trunk when you have extra guests.
