How To Make A Wicker Cushion Template

When measuring for your wicker chair it's best to use the actual chair. We do not recommend using your existing cushion. It can measure very differently from what you need especially if it's been stretched out and worn.

There are two styles of wicker cushions. Flat style cushion and Tufted style cushion.

  • Flat style cushions can be ordered from 2 to 8 inches in thickness.
  • Tufted style cushions can be ordered in 3, 5 and 7 inches in thickness.

Note: If you're going to purchase separate seat and back cushions, please remember to subtract the thickness of the bottom of the cushion from the height of the back cushion.

Because wicker furniture comes in a wide variety of shapes, all wicker cushions will require a template. What is a template? A template is a pliable paper or cloth pattern cut to the shape of the cushion you want.

How to Make a Template

Step 1: First, you will need to cut out the shape on your chair seat. Lay a sheet of paper on your wicker seat and press the paper flat all along the bottom edges.

Step 2: Draw around the outside edge of the seat where you would like the cushion to be and cut out the shape.

Step 3: After you cut out the template, make sure to test that it fits. It may take a few attempts before you are satisfied with your template. Remember, your new cushion will be cut to the same shape as your template, so double check.

  • Note: If you are ordering a flat style cushion, mark on the template which is the front as we will place the zipper on the back of the cushion.

Step 4: Next, you will need to cut out the shape on your chair back.

Step 5: Lay a sheet of paper against the wicker backrest and press the paper flat all along the edges.

Step 6: Draw around the outside edge of the seat back where you would like the cushion to be and cut out the shape. As noted earlier, you need to remember to subtract the thickness of the bottom of the template from the height of the back cushion. In this case, we will assume a 5 inch seat cushion so we will have to cut 5 inches off the bottom of the template.

Step 7: After you cut out the template, make sure to test that it fits. It may take a few attempts before you are satisfied with your template. Remember, your new cushion will be cut to the same shape as your template, so double check.

  • Note: If you are ordering a flat style cushion, mark on the template which is the top as we will place the zipper on the bottom of the cushion.
  • Note: If you are ordering for a love seat or sofa set, you may have two or three cushions for the seat and two or three cushions for the backrest. You will need to create templates for each cushion. In this example, we created four templates. Two for the seat bottoms and two for the back rests.

Step 8: After we cut out all four templates, we test them for fit. As you can see, if we deducted 5 inches from the bottom of the back rest template to account for the seat cushions that will be 5 inches in thickness.

Note: Keep in mind that tufted style cushions are blow fill with poly fibers. You will notice the dimensions can vary by an inch or more based on how compressed the cushion is.
