Holiday Decorating 101 by Contributing Designer Bill Barganier, B Barganier’s Interior Accents, Montgomery, AL

The holidays are upon us, and this usually means family and friends and house guests galore. Here are a few things we’d like to recommend to spruce up your space this holiday season.

Make a Good First Impression

If you live in an area where you are fortunate enough to have a farmer’s market, live wreaths made from boxwoods, magnolias and monkey pine are all classic door décor options. You can easily embellish your wreath with your own signature color in a bow, and add holiday fillers and pine cones.

Pile on the Tree Decorations

The good thing about Christmas tree decorations is that you can add to the collection year after year. Save the ornaments you receive from relatives, neighbors and ornament parties, and pile them on. Don’t be afraid to use gold or silver spray paint to spruce up old ornaments for a fresh new look. And it’s always a fun family activity to create new ornaments with your little ones.

Create a Great Tablescape

For your holiday table, there are no set rules–a nice centerpiece, and a collected mixture of dinnerware, flatware and glasses can come together for a great look. If you’re going for a more formal affair, try using Christmas balls and beaded garlands on your table. Placemats and charger plates add a lot to a tablescape as well.

We love using burlap along with a touch of bling, too. The more layered, the better. And CANDLES, CANDLES, CANDLES! If you worry about flames, there are many battery operated varieties on the market today.

Warm Up the Mantel

Mantels are a great focal point for any room, especially with stockings–past and new–and lots of greenery, perhaps trimmed from the bottom of your tree trunk. You can easily hang a wreath on top of a mirror or large art piece for more punch. Again, candles and layering make a BIG difference.

Pillows are a Must

Throw pillows are a MUST at any time of year to add punch in the room. They can be easily changed out with the seasons and are versatile enough to be moved around your space. Lumbar pillows are a favorite for club chairs, but they also work great for the sofa center, especially when combined with two flanking pillows for each sofa end. Try throw pillows and lumbar pillows in seasonal colors that complement your décor and give your holiday decorating just the added touch it needs.

The holidays should be a time to create your own lasting memories, as well as new traditions. You and your loved ones can always sit back and remember the time you collected, made or received that certain holiday décor. Just remember, you never have to break the bank. Just use this time to enjoy the reason for the season, and time with family and friends!

Happy Holidays!
